Jojo Sayson is an international educator, motivational speaker, and research scientist for the International Space Station through the NASA Human Research Program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Since 2010, he has been a Co-Investigator with Principal Investigator Dr. Alan Hargens in the on-going study “Risk of intervertebral disk damage after prolonged spaceflight” to study the effects of microgravity in the spines of 12 astronauts after 6-month missions on board the International Space Station.  Deliverables from their study will help determine the pathophysiology of low back pain in space and increased risk of disk herniations after spaceflight as well as provide direction in the development of countermeasures.  Dr. Sayson received his Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy from the Royal Pontifical University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines in 1984 and his Masters Degree in 1995, and Doctorate in Orthopedic Manual Therapy in 2003 through the Ola Grimsby Institute in San Diego, California. A Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists, Dr. Sayson is also a Board of Director and Examiner for the Ola Grimsby Institute’s international doctoral candidates. His memberships include the American Physical Therapy Association, American Academy of Physical Therapists, the Aerospace Medical Association, American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) and the American Astronautical Society.
